5 Little Things: Spring Edition

I think it’s safe to say spring has officially worked her way to most of the northern hemisphere and is settling in and starting to share her magic with us here in New England. Our robins arrived this week, I’m preparing my hummingbird feeders as we speak, my seedlings are bursting from their containers, and the ground has finally thawed enough for my long-awaited greenhouse install to begin! (More on that later ~ progress photo below) So of course I have a major case of Spring Fever and can’t sit still long enough to write anything long-form for the life of me.

Enter the Five Little Things era — a quick and easy way of sharing these Friday morning messages that hopefully aligns with your own desires for quick and easy encouragement.

I started Five Little Things last spring, then returned to it again in the fall. And so many of you wrote to say you loved the structure—I did too—so here we go again!

Something good to read. . .

Brené Brown’s latest Strong Ground ~ I’m loving it!

Something helping me thrive. . .

Jay Shetty’s podcast interview with Noah Kahan and listening to the Universe when she leads me to insight like this. (Here’s a link to the interview on YouTube.)

Something fun. . .

The freedom of abandoning books I don’t love at any time I want. I have a whole strategy for these moments I call “I feel low, I think it’s my book” and I’ve had to employ it five times in the past two months. Five!! If you struggle with this and need permission to let bummer books go, here’s a link to the strategy (aka, your permission slip to let go).

Something I’m curious about. . .

Since my little seed-starting project has been going so well these past two months, I’m realizing that I do not indeed have a brown thumb, despite what I’ve believed for the past 40ish years. Instead, I’m starting to realize my mindset could have been the problem all along. And since I’m a HUGE fan of the growth mindset principle, I’m curious what else my mind has been holding me back from trying or succeeding at. (Here’s a link to Carol Dweck’s stunning TED Talk on the subject.)

Something soothing. . .

My youngest is graduating from high school next month, and he’s accepted a scholarship to study at an art college we all love starting next August. So, things are getting real here — the last few months before he’s out in the big world just like his big brother, the last few months before our family leaves the “kid days” and enters a whole new season. What’s soothing me right now is letting the tears come as often as they want to, letting them run down my face and splash onto my shirt whenever they so desire. Here’s the link to an article that made me cry big ol’ tears this week about the whole thing. (Funnily enough, it’s something I wrote years ago about letting go in a similar season shift.)

Wherever you are this morning, whatever’s going on inside your heart and mind, I hope at least one of these five little things brings you a bit of peace for the days ahead.
