Summer Roundup 2025

I saw my first flaming-red maple of the season here in Maine this week. There’s always one, it seems, at the tail end of summer anxiously waiting for the first cool night when it’s close enough to time to fully transform — much like that one friend of yours anxiously waiting for the instant she can pull out the cozy sweaters and pumpkin spice — a beacon reminder that the season will change again this year and it will happen soon.

True to form, I’m not quite ready. I haven’t checked off every summer bucket list item just yet (the drive-in movies are passing me by). I’m still trying to get my micro squash harvest going. The tomato plants have just given their first three ripe, juicy reds. My bell peppers are still the size of olives. And just this morning, I had my absolute best lavender haul so far. . .

Yet, the breeze is feeling a bit crisper, and there’s even a slight hint of an autumn scent in the air here.

So, while we hang on to every last lake day, ice cream run, and tasty in-season watermelon, I thought I’d share. . .
